Let’s be honest, Lockpicking isn’t the most essential skill for a Rogue to have. For some reason we’re always expected to have this leveled up to the max, and are treated as if we’re lesser beings than Gnomes if we don’t. Well, allow your days of hiding to end because leveling Lockpicking is remarkably easy, and I’ll show you how!
I find that most guides have a lot of absurd twists and turns taken that involve Pick Pocketing mobs to get junk boxes, and hanging out at Scarlet Monestary for hours. While those methods are nice, they aren’t as easy as just picking the locks of boxes lying around. I’ve designed this guide with that in mind.
I personally wait until I'm level 70 to start training up professions, trade or not. Having an epic mount makes getting around the game world considerably easier, and so does the ability to tear down any mob in your way. It’s for those reasons that I'm writing this guide with a level 70 player in mind.
1 – 75/100 - Burial Chest
As one of the many players that leveled a Blood Elf toon when Burning Crusade was released, I became very familiar with the troll catacombs in the Ghostlands. If you’re Horde, raising your Lockpicking should be relatively easy here. If you’re Alliance, make sure to watch out for anyone looking to raid Zul’Aman (and don’t gank any of the lowbies, for me?).
75/100-175 - Gallywix’s Lockbox
Horde Rogues will complete their poison quest at this location in The Barrens, and generally only open up this lockbox once in their career. While this is all that’s required, you’d be cheating yourself if you left so early. This box’s lock can be picked all the way up to level 175, so hop to it!
(Note: When you pick this box, it has to respawn. So don't worry, it hasn't bugged out that's just what it's designed to do.)
175 – 225 - Dented Footlocker and Battered Footlocker
Once your Lockpicking skill is at 175 head to the Angor Fortress in the Badlands. Open the Dented Footlocker. There are also Battered Footlockers to open, however these will give you less skill overall. Be sure to watch out for wandering mobs. If there's anywhere that few can become many, it's here.
225-250 - Dented Footlocker
You will now make your way to the Searing Gorge, west of the Badlands. In the caves within the Cauldron you will find more Dented Footlockers. There are very few mobs to worry about down here, and that's a good thing. This is one of the locations where the lockboxes are sparse.
250 – 300 - Scarlet Footlocker
This is hands down the most difficult push to make when leveling your Lockpicking. You will be making your way over to the Eastern Plaguelands to open up Scarlet Footlockers in Tyr’s Hand.
The Scarlet Footlockers are few and far between so grab some snacks, and fire up Pandora Radio, you’ll be here for a while.
Should you find yourself looking to step outside of the usual, feel free to pick pocket all of the mobs around. While I don’t usually condone this, as a level 70 the chances are extremely low that they’ll see you, and the [Heavy Junkbox] you’ll get will help supplement your skill in the face of the rare footlockers.
300 – 350 - Wicker Chest
You’ve basically made it! This is the last push to getting your Lockpicking to max skill, and strangely, it’s the easiest part of the whole process (imo).
To get the last few skill points, make your way over to Zangarmarsh. Just south of the Twin Spire Ruins lies the Feralfen Village. You will find a plethora of Wicker Chests to pick, and these will bring you up to 350 in no time. The mobs in the area shouldn’t provide you with too much trouble, but if they do, killing them will be no problem.
And there you go! You've finally got your Lockpicking all maxed out. As frivolous as this time might have seemed, it's a skill that will allow you to live the dream of being the Rogue advertising his usefulness in trade chat!
But in all seriousness, don't allow this power to corrupt you. Never press anyone to tip you for opening a lockbox, because picking the lock doesn't cost you a thing - any money you make will be 100% profit. People will usually be generous enough to tip on their own if you're nice.

Easiest way I found to level lockpicking is to get the lock boxes from pickpocketing, and while pickpocketing mobs is annoying if you have to go out of your way to do it you can just build it into your active questing routine.
The following macro
/cast Pick Pocket
/stopcasting
/cast Cheap Shot
with Autoloot turned on in the interface get's a second load of cash off a humanoid mob and a chance for other useful things.
For raiding you can replace Cheap Shot with Garotte or Ambush, but I wouldn't want to recommend it before Sap as a resist will suddenly pop you out of stealth next to some very angry individuals.
Also, instead of the boring SM grind from 250-300 I recommend stealth farming the first bit of BRD.
You get 4 guaranteed skillups from the 2 gates, the 1st door, and the big crane that opens the hallway. You can get 20 free skillups an hour before the instance limit resets and it goes all the way to 300.
I just did this recently and spent the extra time before limit reset rehearsing my old barman shanker stealth runs. If you take the same path (youtube for videos of it), you can pickpocket your whole way to the bar and then pickpocket everyone inside the bar and get some gold and some boxes. Also, you get to check out all the really cool Brewfest NPCs already placed inside the bar. The brew to turn you into a Dark iron Dwarf is still widely unknown so it can really surprise some people.
Josh,
I'd really only heard of the brew to turn you into a Dark Iron Dwarf, but I was never able to find out any solid information on it.
Is there any way you could elaborate? I'd love to get that!

I'll second the point about creating a few macros tied to your "from stealth" openers such as Cheap Shot, Garotte and (for me) even Sap! Blizzard made these macros possible at the start of TBC and in levelling from 60-70 I collected somewhere in the region of 300 lock-boxes, all 'level appropriate' from the humanoid mobs I took on. Since you only need about five boxes per level to keep the skill capped, I was able to supply not only my own needs but also those of our other rogues and multiple alts as well. Blizzard also increased the drop-rate of health potions too so I was in good supply for the first month or two of raiding after I hit level 70.
I disagree about the tipping. While I don't pressure people to tip, I think very poorly of those that do not tip. It may not cost much to pick a lock (there was time invested in skilling up), but you NEED me (or another rogue) to open that box for you. I am doing you a favor, and it sure ain't purely out of the kindness of my heart. Not saying I need to get rich, but when I am providing a much needed service, I should be compensated...
Nice guide. Pickpocketing works great if you're leveling lockpicking as you go, otherwise finding a spot with lots of boxes is good.
Last I looked the boxes in the poison quest towers, guarded by Klaven and Gallywix, could only be picked once.
You USED to be able to pick them multiple times to work that skill up, but not anymore.
@Greg, are you talking about the tower in Westfall? I'm currently levelling lockpicking on my rogue alt and it still works. It spawns within a few seconds after you've picked it. It's pretty boring and now at a skill of 167 it's getting slow, but it still works. Not sure where to go next though, being allience. Maybe SM?
(My rogue is lvl 55, I've been lazy about levelling this until now and want to catch up as quick and easy as possible)
Th reason people think the box can only be picked once is that you must manually engage your pick lock skill - I keep mine on the hotbar and then click the locked box for the poison quest - I levelled to 170 before it became gray Jan 6, 2009
