Rogue Movie Weekend: Deep 6

I know, this isn't a Rogue oriented movie, per say, the first portion where he plays Rogue/Feral Druid is worthwhile to watch.

Deep 6 is also a great video to watch if you're new to arena, or just looking to get better. Seeing the battles pan out from a different character's point of view is something that has certainly helped me.

Plus, I'm a fan of people that break the mold. Being a Druid that plays all three specs in one movie, and plays them all extremely well? There's no way you can't like this guy.

Enjoy this movie in some spare time you've got over your weekend. And if you're at PAX keep an eye out for me!

Headed up to PAX!

For those of you that don't know the Penny Arcade Expo is going on this weekend in the wonderful city of Seattle.

I'll be up there all weekend, and I'll be doing my best to cover what I see through text and pictures from my Twitter feed, so be sure and follow me!

Hope you all have a good weekend.

(The Rogue Movie Weekend will be up tomorrow!)

Being There

As of late, my Rogue has been put on the back burner. Not because I want him to be, but because my guild needs me.

Right now we're pretty low on healers. There's a lack of recruitable ones that are within the gear range of the content we're progressing through, and the ones we have haven't been showing up. Wether it be from issues of their computers being broken, real life, or anything else, they just haven't been around.

So I've stepped up and taken over some of the healing reigns on my Shaman. While I originally rolled him as an alt, I've never been more glad that I've got him around!

Before anyone gets confused, no, this isn't me saying that I've found a new favorite class. Being a Rogue is now, and always will be my love when it comes to World of Warcraft.

The reason for my happiness has little to do with how much I actually enjoy playing my Shaman. Sure, it's a nice change of pace to be healing when all I've ever known are DPS classes. And I'll be honest, totems are a really fun game mechanic to have control over, but it has to do with being there for my guild. I consider myself a very loyal person when it comes to working for a bigger cause, so helping here really isn't an issue (in fact, I've really only /gquit once in my WoW career).

Being there for my guild means a lot to me. I understand that this is a video game, but accomplishing these goals with this same group of people has really come to mean a lot to me. I remember working really hard on our first kill of Illidan Stormrage. After spending a long night of attempting him we had decided to try him again the next day instead of bashing our head against a wall. The next day I showed up only to be edged out by a guy that had never done the fight, and showed up late, but got in over me (due to some silliness that had to do with seniority). I was pretty upset! But as time progressed I realized that without all the time that I had put in on the fight, that kill wouldn't have been possible. Sadly, the trend of me missing out on guild first boss kills hasn't changed. But post-Illidan, it remains my fault!

The people that I talk to almost every night on Ventrilo have become, I feel, pretty good friends. No, this isn't some creepy Stockholm Syndrome-esque type of speech, but rather a realization. While I hang out out with friends on the weekends at parties and such, I spend a good chunk of my weekdays chatting with the people in my guild. Wether it be through our Ventrilo server or gchat, I've gotten to know these folks pretty well. (And this isn't just limited to the members of my current guild! There's a handful of people that I remain good friends with from my last guild. You know who you are.)

So what does your guild mean to you guys? Do you consider them friends? Closer? Further? Or just people you play a fantasy MMO with? Let me know in the comments.

Why Other MMO's Don't Threaten WoW

"It's going to be the WoW killer!"

That's a phrase that's often uttered when someone is talking about a new MMO on the horizon. I heard it with Tabula Rasa, I heard it with Age of Conan, and now I'm hearing it with Warhammer Online.

Now there's no doubt in my mind that all of these are good games. They're all MMORPG's with great gameplay styles, and they all bring something different to the table. But none of these games are WoW killers. In fact, I firmly believe that such a thing doesn't exist.

Why?

Well sure, I could point out the fact that World of Warcraft has an unstoppable juggernaut of a subscriber base that could fill half of Australia. Sure, I could point out the fact that the gameplay is easily more polished than any other MMO that I've played. And sure, I could point out the fact that the Burning Crusade is one of the fastest selling games ever. But I won't.

Believe it or not, none of these things have to do with why there isn't a WoW killer. The reason that there won't be a WoW killer has to do with us. We're the players, we're the fans. We're the people that get up in arms because we couldn't attend our favorite game company's convention. We're the people that get so in depth with the lore of a video game that you'd almost swear we think (though, some of us wish) that it was real.

It's because we're all fans of Blizzard Entertainment and what they do that there won't be a WoW killer. The very same way that there won't be a StarCraft killer, and the very same way there won't be a Diablo killer.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm about to drop a bomb, so prepare yourselves. We're all fanboys (or fangirls, I'm an equal opportunity blogger)! I know, this word has had a certain stigma on it that makes it almost offensive, but there's really nothing wrong with it. A fanboy is someone that's very passionate for a company's products, and they're big fans of what said company does with their development dollars. Is that really so bad?

Don't get me wrong, there are those that give us all a bad name, but if you look at any group of people there will always be the hardcore of the hardcore. Don't let this get to you, they exist everywhere.

Being a fan of a certain product to the point of fanboydom in nothing to be ashamed of. So what, you like what a company does? Embrace it, know that you're a part of a large, welcoming community. This isn't a community that's filled with players that will drop something because suddenly the grass seems greener on the other side. This is a community that likes the world we game in. We love to feel like we're part of something larger, and we're in a situation that's conducive to that. Love it and embrace it!

Essential AddOn: WowMatrix

No, I haven't gone crazy. I know that this isn't an AddOn, but its usefulness has taken away 100% of my AddOn updating worries.

WowMatrix is a very simple to install, simple to use program that will update all of your WoW AddOns for you! For me it's been a dream come true. As a raider I have to update Omen Threat Meter constantly to make sure that I'm ready to go at raid time. Now WowMatrix takes care of that for me! All I do is start it up, tell it to update all my AddOns and let it launch WoW before logging in each day (being able to update all of my other AddOns doesn't hurt either)!

Downloading and installing additional AddOns is a snap with WowMatrix as well! Just click the "Get More AddOns" tab within the program, choose the AddOn you want, and tell it to install it for you. All you've got to do is configure it next time you log in.

To download, just head out to the WowMatrix website and download a copy for the operating system that you play on. Once you've got that, install it to the directory of your choice and you're all set to jet.

Enjoy all the time you've just saved!

Content Patch Before Wrath of the Lich King

Yesterday Eyonix announced that there would be a content patch before Wrath of the Lich King. Stating on the General Forums:

"With the release of Wrath of the Lich King approaching, we wanted to provide you with some important information. In preparation for the expansion, we will be issuing a new content patch in the coming weeks. Much like the patch made available shortly before The Burning Crusade's release, this content patch is designed to bridge current game content with that of the expansion and will contain some exciting changes and additions.

We have outlined some of the larger features scheduled to release with the patch below:

New class spells and talents
Stormwind Harbor
Barbershops in capital cities
Zeppelin towers outside of Orgrimmar and Tirisfal Glades
Two brand-new Arenas featuring challenging new layouts, terrain hazards, and moving obstacles
Guild calendar
Hunter pet skill revamp
New profession: Inscription

As mentioned above, this is not a comprehensive list, just some of the major highlights. We’ll post the full patch notes as soon as they’re available. Regarding Inscription, please note that all Burning Crusade players will be able to select Inscription as one of their two professions and level up to a skill level of 375 with it. Upon the release of Wrath of the Lich King, players who purchase and install the expansion will be able to continue leveling in Inscription and the other professions beyond 375."
Don't get me wrong, Burning Crusade is a great expansion. I've thoroughly enjoyed all that it's offered but I think this is a great change. While it'll be a little strange using the new and improved Rogue talent trees without having the full amount of talent points, I think that this will cause a lot of very welcome changes in both PvE and PvP. And honestly, who isn't excited for a shave and a haircut?
Allowing players time to adjust to the larger talent trees and game play elements is a great idea. I know that I'm very excited to try out the new talents in the settings that they were designed for, instead of a beta server that I can barely connect to.

Giving players the option to level up Inscription is also very significant. Pre-BC we weren't given Jewelcrafting, so this is clearly a new direction for Blizzard. It's nice of them to allow those interested in it to get a jump on it, so they're not struggling to get it leveled in time for the first raids of the new expansion.

Though, I don't remember the content patches coming out Pre-BC as early as this one seem to be. "In the coming weeks" is some pretty ambiguous language, but I suppose it can't be more than a month... right?

It's 3:31 A.M., do you know who's on your Vent?

When you're an insomniac during the scheduled maintenance, life sure can be lonely.

Rogue Forums: What is holding YOU back in arena?

I was reading the Rogue Forums this morning and came across a pretty interesting question. Agkelos of Frostwolf asks:

"I've thought about it quite a bit and I think I've realised what's holding me back in arena.

1. Wanting to stand toe to toe. I should really be staying close to my max melee range so I can run out and deadly throw easier against those casters.

2. Energy conservation. I have a tendency to blow my load. Sometimes this results in not having the energy for a kick or DT when I really need one.

3. Minor tunnel visioning. I want to see my target die and I want to see it now. This isn't to say I lose track of the fight, but sometimes I just say "Screw it he's at 20%! My partner can live for a second more until I finish this guy." Sometimes that's a good thing, I'll kill the guy then either save my partner or 1v1 the other guy (high chance of me winning). Sometimes it's a bad thing.

Another thing to do with the tunnel vision is even though I now have %**#ing huge cast bars for my target and my focus I still rarely actually pay attention to the focus cast bar. As such I don't CoS, vanish, or blind fears consistantly.

These are the things I need to work on and all I can think of that is holding me back from 2050+.

What is holding YOU back personally? No, you can't say your partner. What are you doing wrong personally that you need to improve on?"

Personally, I think I have an issue with the tunnel visioning. Watching Neilyo 14 helped me deal with that issue a tiny bit. Seeing him simply do his thing on a target and not get panicked (as I feel I do) is pretty effective. But I very much like Agkelos' point of view, about what he's doing wrong, not blaming it on his partner. It's a refreshing change.

Should you be an arena player, what is it for you? Feel free to elaborate in the comments.

Rogue Movie Weekend: Untouchable 3

I know that the news of the Rogue tank isn't totally new, but to this day it amazes me. To be at a point where you've used your own classes' mechanics in order to create an armor set that makes you quite literally untouchable is something else.

When I first heard of this video I assumed something was afoot, perhaps some very dedicated healers were at work? But as I watched the video I realized that this dodge set was the real deal.

Watch as Gaeowyn of Shards of Existence main tanks Illidan Stormrage, easily one of the most difficult fights of the game.

In some spare time you've got over the weekend, check it out!

Almost makes a fella want to make a dodge set.

My Cousin Rocks!

Talk about a good birthday present!

He sure knows how to get a gift that will be used. :D

Thanks cousin Brett!

How To: Be a Rogue in Karazhan

Raiding as a Rogue isn't exactly the most stressful position in the world to be in. When you really break it down, your role is to stay alive and keep maximum damage output on your target. But if being a raider in World of Warcraft has taught me anything, it's that boss fights are very good at throwing even the most experienced of Rogues curve balls.

That's why I've decided to start making quick, easy to digest guides to help anyone that might have any questions on a fight. I'll be explaining (in a nutshell) what the fight consists of, your role, and any loot that you're going to want to keep an eye out for.

First up is Karazhan. Every raider has to start here eveuntally, and this dungeon contains the building blocks of end game Rogues.

Let's get started!

Attumen the Huntsman and Midnight:
What Happens: Attumen isn't the first person that you'll see here, but rather his steed, Midnight. Midnight is neutral, so you don't need to worry about anyone foolishly getting proximity aggro.

When Midnight is pulled, she (not sure why she's a she, but it's just mentally always been that way for me) will be alone until 95%. At 95% Attumen will also show up. The tank(s) of the raid group will pick up Attumen as quickly as they can. When either Midnight or Attumen hits 25%, Attumen will mount Midnight, and will remain that way until he is defeated.

What You Need To Do: DPS the target that has the most threat on it.

Moroes:
What Happens: Moroes will be standing on what appears to be a stage, with a few honored guests. Among Moroes' honored guests will be four NPC's that will add to the potential difficulty of this fight. There are six possible adds that can spawn, so never count on this fight to be the same as the last time you've seen it (if you have).

There will often be a kill order set up on the NPCs, usually (but not always) ending with Moroes himself. Be sure to pay attention to this. You're in a 10 man group fighting five mobs as part of a boss encounter, so coordination is crucial.

Moroes will Vanish from time to time, and he'll throw a very big, very nasty Garrote on a member of your raid.

What You Need To Do: Follow the kill order, and don't pull aggro.

Maiden of Virtue:
What Happens: Your raid group will create a circle around Maiden, and your tank will pull her and keep her in the center of the room. She has a nasty Consecration type spell that will deal damage to all of the melee DPS (including the tank), so your role in this fight is admittedly less than that of the ranged DPS.

She has a silence and a Repentance that will periodically incapacitate your entire raid, but this breaks on damage so as melee DPS it's very possible that you won't even notice it.

What You Need To Do: Be smart! You're a part of this raid group, so make sure that you do damage but don't become an unneeded stress on your healers. If you find yourself getting to roughly 30%-40% health pop Cloak of Shadows, run out and bandage yourself.

Opera Event:
What Happens:
• Wizard of Oz: You will be faced with five mobs, Dorthee, Strawman, Tinhead, Roar and Tito. This boss fight, unlike Moroes will allow you to fight the same mobs, and take them down in the same order that you wish to each and every time.
Allow your tanks to choose which mobs they wish to tank, and in what order to take them down. This encounter, like Moroes requires lots of coordination. Follow a kill order and listen in on Ventrilo for any orders that change on the fly.
Once Dorthee and her friends have been defeated, The Crone will spawn. She will send a cyclone around the room, knocking players up into the air, rendering them useless. If you see it going towards someone, be sure and let them know.
• The Big Bad Wolf: The Big Bad Wolf will be taken by your tank right away, and held in the middle of the room. From time to time a player will be turned into a Gnome dressed in red (who could this be?). The Big Bad Wolf will lock onto this player, and try to kill them so it's essential that they stay alive any way that they can. Running around the edge of the room is generally the best bet to stay alive.
• Romulo and Julianne: Romulo and Julianne will spawn separately in the beginning. You'll fight Julianne first, on her own. She's primarily a spellcaster with a healing spell called Eternal Affection. It's pretty clear when she's casting it, because her hands start to glow like nobody's business. It's your job, as a Rogue, to kick this and make sure that she doesn't cast it.
Romulo is a melee DPS powerhouse, so he's a bit more difficult for you. If you're careful, you can DPS from directly behind him. If you're too far to one side or the other, you're going to get cleaved and die.
Once both Romulo and Julianne have been defeated on their own, you fight them together. They both have to die at the same time, so be mindful of how much damage you're outputting. Also, be sure to keep your eyes open for Julianne's heals. Remember, it's your job alone to kick these!

What You Need To Do:
• Wizard of Oz: Kill the target that is being main tanked, and don't stray. Like any other fight, drawing aggro can be detrimental to your raid's efforts.
• The Big Bad Wolf: DPS the Big Bad Wolf, and keep your distance when a player is about to get turned into the red Gnome. If you get turned into the red Gnome, just Vanish.
• Romulo and Julianne: DPS Julianne, and watch yourself when you're on Romulo. I personally just stay out and let the ranged DPS kill him. Whenever Julianne is alive, it's your responsibility to make sure that she doesn't heal.

What You Want:
• The Big Bad Wolf: [Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle] (this should go to a Hunter first as well), [Big Bad Wolf's Paw]
• Julianne: [Romulo's Poison Vial], [Blade of the Unrequited]

The Curator:
What Happens: The Curator will be pulled by the tank, with his back facing the end of the hallway that you came from. He will send out Astral Flares that will deal damage to any target that come close to. As melee DPS it's your job to make sure that these don't get into the healers and start pushing back with their cast times. The Curator can deal some heavy melee damage, so keeping the healers in the free and clear is essential.

The player second in aggro will also get hit by Hateful Bolts. This job is usually reserved for a ranged DPS with high HP, like a Warlock.

Once The Curator has used all of his mana on Astral Flares, he'll begin Evocating. It's during this time that you've got to go all out DPS, because it's the main chance that you have to deal damage to him. Once he hits 30% he will enter an enraged state, and will stop sending Astral Flares at the raid. Just go all out damage on him now. Your tank should have plenty of aggro.

What You Need To Do: Kill Astral Flares unless told otherwise, and save your cooldowns for the evocation stage of this fight.

Shade of Aran:
What Happens: Shade of Aran can be a tricky fight. He has plenty of aces up his sleeve, and is the only fight in Karazhan that doesn't require a tank. He'll swap between shooting random members of the raid with a Frostbolt, a Fireball, and Arcane Missiles.

On top of that, he will do a Magnetic Pull to bring your entire raid next to him, and begin casting a very deadly Arcane Explosion. When this happens, just run to the outside of the room as quickly as you can! You'll be slowed, but if you begin running to the outside right away, you'll be fine.

He also has a Blizzard spell that he accompanies with Chains of Ice, to make sure someone gets trapped in it. As melee DPS, you'll be in the center of the room (presumably) where he is. The Blizzard will be of no concern to you there.

What you absolutely need to watch for is the Flame Wreath. There's no interrupting this spell, and once it's cast it'll stick around for a good 15 seconds. While this spell is around, DO NOT MOVE OR USE CLOAK OF SHADOWS! It doesn't matter if you're in it or not, don't move or cloak! It will cause a large detonation right on your feet, and you'll cause a wipe. Wouldn't want that to happen, would we?

When he hits 40%, he will mass polymorph your entire raid and refill his mana. This can be prevented if enough of his spell casts are interrupted, causing him to use less mana. He will also summon four Water Elementals. These are easily dealt with by either having a tank hold aggro on them until they despawn (after 90 seconds) or have a Warlock banish and fear them until they despawn.

What You Need To Do: DPS Aran with all you've got. There are no concerns with aggro here, so unload everything. Usually raids will ask that players interrupt different schools of magic, generally Frost and Fire, but this can easily get disorganized. Just do what you can to interrupt his Frost and Fire spells when you can, but not Arcane. His Arcane Missiles really aren't that big of a threat, so let him cast those as much as he wants.

Terestian Illhoof:
What Happens: Illhoof will be standing in the middle of a room with a slightly larger, orange imp named Kil'rek, and a good deal of of smaller white imps, called Fiendish Imps. Ideally, your group will pull just the smaller white imps initially, leaving on Illhoof and Kil'rek before you start the fight.

The basis of this fight is simple: when Kil'rek dies, Illhoof will be weakened for a short amount of time. There will be a constant stream of Fiendish Imps, and Illhoof will attempt to sacrifice a member of your raid through Demon Chains. These chains will be the number one kill target when they appear.

What You Need To Do: Be mindful of your raid's situation before you go all out DPS on Kil'rek. His death will weaken Illhoof, but making sure that he dies at a time that's convenient (i.e. no Demon Chains, very few Fiendish Imps alive) is ideal.

Be prepared for Demon Chains as well, targeting them in the heat of battle can be a bit difficult, so making a "/target Demon Chains" macro can help drastically. Killing them is your number one priority!

Chess Event:
What Happens: All of your skills as a Rogue are basically useless here. What you're going to do is jump into the shoes of another character, who is basically a giant chess piece. Make sure that you have people that are very watchful in the shoes of the healers, the Orc Necrolites.

Communication here is key. Make sure that everyone can agree on which piece they are going to use, and make sure that they understand the role of that piece. This isn't anything like the actual game of chess, so make sure that the player that gets the King understands that if he dies, you lose out on free loot.

What You Need To Do: Choose a piece that you can handle (a great starter piece is the Orc Grunt), and listen to your raid leaders. Work as a team!

Netherspite:
What Happens: Netherspite is a fight that requires everyone in your guild to absolutely have their head in the game. If there's even a single person that gets lazy, you will wipe. I'd go so far as to say that this fight is more difficult than Prince Malchezaar!

When Netherspite is pulled three portals will spawn around the room. One red, one green and one blue. The red beam will cause whoever stands in it to become the tank, regardless to how much aggro they, or the rest of the raid, produces. The green beam causes anyone that stands in it to cast heals for more, and their spells cost less mana. The blue beam will cause whoever stands in it to deal more damage.

These beams will ideally be held by players, and not go to Netherspite. If they do, he will gain buffs from them that will make it impossible for you to win. Generally each beam will require two people. Those two people will have to alternate between banish phases (mentioned a bit later) for when they take the beam. I know, it sounds a bit complicated, but it's actually pretty easy to keep track of.

He will deal periodic AoE damage in the form of Nether Burn, and he will spawn Void Zones all around the room, generally underneath a player.

After this phase, he will go into a banished phase. He will still be veunerable to damage (including melee), but he will melee players that get to close to him, and use Netherbreath. Netherbreath will target four players at random and knock them back.

What You Need To Do: Make sure that you stand in your assigned portal, if you get one. Chances are good that you'll be in the blue beam, because as a pure DPS class you can really shine here. Though, if you get assigned to the green portal you can also do some pretty outstanding damage with the lowered spell cost (yes, it applies to your abilities!). Don't be afraid to use Healthstones or Healing Potions to stay alive.

Prince Malchezaar:
What Happens: Prince Malchezaar is considered to be the last fight of Karazhan, mostly because of the desirable loot that he has.

The fight is very straightforward, and contains three phases. Phases 1 and 2 are the most difficult, due to how random they can be. The randomness comes in the form of infernals that fall from the sky, causing AoE damage where they land. Their placement is based on chance, so it's best that your raid group place itself somewhere central, providing plenty of room for error.

During phase 1 he will Enfeeble five random raid members (excluding the tank), reducing their hit points to 1, and their healing effects received to 0. He will immediately follow this up with a Shadow Nova. Ideally, you'll have gotten 30 yards away from Prince Malcheezy if you find yourself enfeebled, preventing a swift death, but if you are unsure of your distance from him, and think that there's any chance that you might be within his range, pop Cloak of Shadows to (hopefully) resist this.

Phase 2 will bring a new era of pain for your tank, as Prince Malchezaar will begin dual wielding axes. Other than that, the fight will remain the same.

Phase 3 causes his axes to leave his hands and float around the raid, damaging to a random target. If you find that the axes have you targeted, pop Evasion. Evasion should last long enough for the axes to move on to another target. He will also stop Enfeebling in this phase, but he will continue Shadow Novas. The Shadow Novas will happen indiscriminately, so avoiding them becomes nearly impossible.

What You Need To Do: DPS Prince, but make sure that you don't get stuck in the fire of an Infernal or get killed by a Shadow Nova. If you find yourself stick within the 30 yard range of Shadow Nova while Enfeebled, pop Cloak of Shadows and cross your fingers.

Nightbane:
What Happens: The reason I have Nightbane listed last is because he is an optional boss. In order to summon him you'll need a raid member that has a Blackened Urn. In order to get that, you'll need to complete the Medivh's Journal quest line, starting at Archmage Alturus.

The fight is very straightforward, with only two phases. The first phase consists of a basic tank and spank. Nightbane will occasionally cast a Fear in the form of Bellowing Roar. You also need to watch for Charred Earth. It can really cause some big damage to you or anyone standing on it, and its damage cannot be prevented by Cloak of Shadows.

While damaging Nightbane during this phase make sure to stand near his back leg. He has a very nasty Cleave if you're standing too close to his face, and he will Tail Sweep you if you're standing too close to his rear. He will occasionally cast Distracting Ash on a random member of the raid, but this, and the effect of Tail Sweep, can be Cloaked.

Phase 2 will roll around at each 25% interval (75%, 50%, 25%). During this phase he will take off, where he can still be damaged by ranged attacks, and begin to cast Rain of Bones. This will spawn a good deal of Restless Skeletons, who should be killed before Nightbane lands again.

What You Need To Do: DPS Nightbane near his back leg, and make sure that you're not getting Cleaved or hit by Tail Sweep. Watch the ground for any Charred Earth, and if it spawns right on you, just run through Nightbane and damage him from the other side.

During Phase 2 you'll want to use your cooldowns when all of the Restless Skeletons have spawned. Popping Adrenaline Rush, Blade Flurry and Evasion will allow you to deal some big damage on the skeletons without being a liability to your healers.

UPDATE: Brutallus down in 3:49 by Inner Sanctum!

Not to take anything away from Exodus, but it appears that not long after they broke the DPS record on Brutallus, Inner Sanctum of the Silvermoon(EU) server re-broke the record in an astounding 3:49!

The WoW Web Stats show that the top spot belongs to a Rogue by the name of Essath with 3,357 DPS! The second and third spots belong to a Hunter by the name of Egar with 3,335 DPS and a Rogue that goes by Samité with 3,223 DPS.

You can find all the information on the kill here.

What a turn of events! I can only imagine how far this will go. Though, chances are good that this isn't the end of the Brutallus races.

Brutallus down in 4 minutes by Exodus

Chances are good that I'm just as surprised as you are by this. I used to think just killing Brutallus were impressive, but Exodus of the Kel'Thuzad(US) server has absolutely destroyed him.

The WoW Web Stats show some obscenely impressive numbers with a Hunter, Valrath topping the meters with an astounding 3,221 DPS. Following him are two Rogues, Davlncl and Cika both putting out an impressive 3,189 and 3,017 DPS respectively. Talk about representing the class! Who knows, maybe one day I'll get Warglaives and I'll be able to put out those kind of numbers?

UPDATE: Here's a picture of the kill, though it appears to only be their meters.

What Is Your Character's Theme Song?

Thanks to another great shared topic at Blog Azeroth, my mental gears have been a-turnin'!

When I first saw the question as to what my character's theme song would be, my mind raced. Could it be my favorite song? No, great song but it just doesn't have the Rogueish feel that I'd like it to.

What about something really metal? Nah, I do feel like a badass, but I need to find a balance!

After much thought, the answer became clear...

The Fashion - "Like Knives"

While the name of the song sounds pretty cliché, there's no denying that it fits! I know I'm not the only one of us that needs to be reminded to be more in control. Button mashers, I'm looking at you. But, I think we're all fans of the flashes of our blades as they grind right though our opponent's bones.

Anyone else out there have any good ideas for what a good Rogue theme song would be? I've made my choice, but I'm certainly open to suggestions.

Welcome to www.rogueseyeview.com!

I've finally made the leap to getting myself a domain, so welcome to www.rogueseyeview.com!

To those of you that have this in your bookmarks and RSS readers as rogueseyeview.blogspot.com, worry not! Your bookmarks and RSS feeds will continue to work (but feel free to update your bookmarks if you want to).

Know that for the next few days, the domain rogueseyeview.com might be a bit wonky, but I'm assured that it'll soon be working the way it's intended (that language sounds pretty familiar).

Late Nights, In The Deeprun Tram...

No, not that!

My server has a public Ventrilo server set up, which I think is great. It allows players from both factions to hang out, chat and have a good time! This was the product of the end of the night, where a Russian Roulette of sorts was created out of a mass spawning of portals. After clicking on what I thought was Orgrimmar, I ended up in Silvermoon. Though, the night was still a blast! Glad I decided to log in after all!

Do any of you have anything of the sort on your servers? If so, hop on there and check it out! If not, I'd suggest getting one going! Being able to chat with players that you normally wouldn't be able to turned out to be a lot of fun for me. It certainly brought out the best in the people that I was there with.

Study: Playing WoW Makes You A Better Surgeon

"The American Psychological Association has released a study of surgeons (why they chose surgeons to study, who knows) that says surgeons who play World of Warcraft and other video games can make them a better surgeon overall. Not only does controlling a game character give you better motor skills, but playing an involved and complicated game can, not surprisingly, can make you a better analytical thinker and problem solver. Surgeons who played videogames (though they don't mention how much or how often) were faster at advanced surgical procedures and make fewer errors than surgeons who didn't.

So does this mean that playing videogames can replace education entirely? Not so fast, back to schoolers -- apparently playing games also makes things not so complicated seem not so interesting. While leading a pickup group in Karazhan will definitely help your problem solving abilities (though probably not your stress levels), it will make it harder for you to do things like settle down and study a book. As with everything, moderation is the key.

I feel weird snagging a story from WoW Insider like this, but I felt that this was just too cool not to pass along. I guess we, as Rogues aren't just good for slicing up Azerothians, huh?

The Big 2-0

That's right ladies and gents, today I turn 20!

Usually, I'm the last person to go around heralding that it's my birthday, but I'm pretty about happy today.

Why?

I've got lots of great content that I'm working on for all of you reading my blog, and given the fact that I'm done with finals I should have them all finished up soon!

So thanks to all of you that have made my blog the success that I've considered it to be so far. Being at one of the many microphones that the World of Warcraft community has been a thrill. To have people listen is even better.

Now, off to bed so I can see what's in store for me today! :D
(Though, I will miss an Illidan kill tonight. And who in their right mind doesn't want their chance at a [Warglaive of Azzinoth]? Talk about a Happy Birthday!)

PS> Be sure and listen to the qualified panel (including myself) on the PC Gamer Podcast!

Rogue Movie Weekend: Neilyo 14

I'm going to have to start the Rogue Movie Weekend a bit earlier this time around! I'm only human too, and finals have had me all but dead to the world.

So, for this weekend you guys should check out Neilyo 14, the guy is an absolute legend and I base a lot of what I do in PvP on his videos. Of all the Rogues that I've watched Neilyo has the best grasp on the game mechanics, and really makes them work in his favor.

Enjoy!

WoW Community Update - 8/14/2008

Gold Selling Site Uses Bodies to Advertise:
It looks like some friends from my very own battlegroup got a strange surprise this morning, when Alliance players on the Dunemaul server woke up to the bodies of Gnomes spelling out MMOInn.com's name. As annoying as this, I suppose if it's an alternative to getting those whispers all night long I'll settle.

[Thanks Kotaku]

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime Attempts to Make Good With Would Be BlizzCon Attendees:
After the ticket fiasco of Monday and Tuesday, it appears that Mike Morhaime is trying to put forth an effort to help out any BlizzCon attendees that didn't get their hand in the cookie jar fast enough.

Morhaime says, on BlizzCon.com:
"...we've reevaluated our convention hall space and come up with some solutions that will allow us to offer 3,000 more tickets for sale. We know this will not be enough to satisfy the very high level of demand for tickets this year, but we want to ensure that BlizzCon remains a great experience for those of you who are able to attend. To avoid the issues many of you faced this week, we'll be selling these 3,000 via a lottery. We'll post further details once our plans are finalized. Please note that the lottery will only be open to those with an active Blizzard Account as of 9:00 PM PDT on August 12, the time that the 'Sold Out' notice was posted. "

While the amount of tickets left is a pittance compared to the amount of people that are looking to get into the convention, it's nice to see Blizzard try to redeem themselves. They could have taken the money that they've gotten and walked away, but they've chosen not to.

Kudos, Blizzard. It's great to see that you guys still love your fan base as much as we love you.

BlizzCon 2008, The Ticket Fiasco

BlizzCon 2008 sold out in minutes. But how fair did the process end up being?

First come first serve is usually a system that works. However, when the first come part of the equation is riddled with flaws, there's going to be backlash.

Personally, I was attempting to get my hands on a BlizzCon 2008 ticket for my friend. He's been working an awful lot lately, so he wasn't able to be at his computer when they went on sale. I was able to get a ticket, put it in my cart, enter my account information, accept the terms of service and get disconnected.  Wait, what? I got disconnected when I had a ticket?

So how many of you were able to actually make it through the system and get (what seems to be) the hottest ticket on the face of the planet?

UPDATE: If you really want a ticket, be prepared to shell out some big bucks. It's a shame that there are so many scalpers, when there are so many more fans that just want to attend a game convention.

The Art Of Alts, For The PvP Minded

PvP is something that we either hate or we love. Not all of us are meant to PvP, and I know that. But what if I could give you a a simple pointer that would up your game in ways that you'd never thought possible? With this tip you'll be able to know exactly what your opponent is going to do before they do.

I know not all of you are going to like this, but you're going to have to make some alts.

What's the reasoning behind making alts, you ask? Well, let's think about it this way; the better you know how to play a class that you're fighting, the better you can predict what he or she is going to do. If you know what they're going to do, and you know what that ability does, you can better counter it or prevent it!

So at what point do you truly have the knowledge to know what your opponent is going to do? To what extent do you need to level an alt? Well, ultimately that's up to you. But in my experience I found that roughly level 40 is the cutoff for knowing the basics of another class. By then you'll have learned most, if not all, of the abilities that other classes have at their disposal and you, having used them plenty of times by now, will know in what conditions using them is ideal, and what to look for.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't an overnight fix, and will take a good amount of your time but I find that it's absolutely worth it. Besides, Blizzard has really revamped leveling, so this isn't that bad.

So what do you need to do? Well, first things first, roll an alt of a class that you a.) have difficulty fighting and b.) will actually enjoy playing (no brainers, I know).

Secondly, make sure that you don't forget your main. Your main is (hopefully) a class that you love, so don't feel like your neglecting it. Just know that this is, in fact an alt. Play this character when you've got some spare time, my personal favorite time to play mine was after raid hours. Sure, there wasn't a whole lot of time because my guild's raids tend to end relatively late, but I had no plans of power leveling my own character either.

Now just watch yourself. Understand the class' abilities and think about what situations that you use them. Do they have abilities with cooldowns? If so, watch for them as well. These are generally last ditch efforts, so if you can counter them you're in good shape. Lastly, pay attention to situations where you get stymied. If you get totally rocked by a scripted monster because you slipped up, or you over-extended yourself, watch for players making the same mistakes. Don't get me wrong, I understand that PvE and PvP are two very different scenarios, but there are times where players make the same mistakes in both.

And who knows, maybe you'll end up enjoying the class so much that you'll level it to 70! That's the case of my Shaman.

Put 'Cha Stunna Shades On!

In the event that you don't own a pair of Stunna Shades, [Quad Deathblow X44 Goggles] are an acceptable substitute.

My Rogue, Skaarjonic demonstrates.

But in all seriousness, I'm really excited that I'm finally rid of my [Grimgrin Faceguard]. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice helm, but after a while having no meta gem really got to me.

Looks like the [Cursed Vision of Sargeras] is back in the tumbler for my guild's Enhancement Shaman!

Rogue Movie Weekend: Acrono's Shadowstep Tricks

To all you Shadowstep Rogues out there, noob or pro, 1300 or 2400, check out these movies in some spare time you have over the weekend.

Acrono was one of the Rogues that fell under the real deal category in my book. Sadly, rumor has it that he's since quit the game, but his memory lives on in his PvP movies.

Have a good weekend!

Essential AddOn: Omni Cooldown Counter

WHAT: Omni Cooldown Counter (OmniCC).

HOW: OmniCC is a simple, but powerful tool. Instead of your skills' icons slowly returning to full color in a clockwise motion, a timer will be put on top of the button.

This simple change does wonders -- especially as a Rogue. Knowing when your cooldowns are ready will help time when you can fit them into your rotations (without losing track of Slice and Dice!), and make sure that you've got enough energy ready to use them.

But its use doesn't stop there, think about the possibilities in PvP! Knowing exactly when Gouge, Kidney Shot or Kick come off of their cooldowns can be a deciding factor in a battleground, duel or even an arena.

Remember, as a Rogue you've only got a few tools in your toolbox, make sure that you keep track of them.

WHERE: You can get it from Curse Gaming, or by clicking here.

A Blast From The Past

Once upon a time, I played with a PvP lord named Murr. Murr was easily one of the best Druids that I ever saw play the game, and had some Photoshop skills to boot.

I was cruising through my machine's picture folder and found this picture of my Rogue, photoshopped by him:

Memories sure do sneak up on you.

PS: Chris Crocker, watch your back.

Vintage Sundays!

Recently my guild has taken up the idea of Vintage Sundays. We go back to the old content, and remember the days of yesteryear! While on the surface this might seem like a waste of time, it's actually a lot of fun to all of those that played pre-BC.

This week we decided to take on Molten Core and the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj (better known as AQ40).

Molten Core was really a nostalgic experience. Remembering back to the days of my Undead Warrior, wearing my Battlegear of Valor really brought a virtual tear to my virtual eye. These bosses really used to mean something, but sadly now they're relics in an old world.

Up next was AQ40! I have to admit, I was really excited to see this instance. I'd never downed C'Thun, so I bit immediately at the chance to do so.

First things first though, my guild had apparently run short on time and left the Twin Emperors up.

After crossing the short speed bump that was the Twim Emps, it was time to get down to business: C'Thun!

I'm really glad that I got an opportunity to check this fight out. Hands down, it was one of the neatest experiences I've had in the game. I really wish I'd had a chance to try it when I was level 60 though. This fight was amazing as a level 70, but having it actually be a challenge, and to be back in a good 'ol 40 man raid would have been much cooler.

I asked for a nice kill shot. But sadly, just like the family picture that goes out on the holidays, there's always someone willing to mess it up for the rest of us. However, the family Polaroid might not have photoshop, but I do!

Interface Change!

I was on the Beta server today stealing some horses, and I noticed this subtle change to the interface:

It would appear that there's a cool new hotbar and portrait for when you're controlling a vehicle or mount that's quest related. Looks pretty slick!

Wrath of the Lich King Beta - Week 2

My second week in the Wrath of the Lich King beta has been a lot of fun. I was able to level my Rogue to level 73, and I saw a lot of impressive gameplay on the way there that I can't wait to share.

Same as last time...
POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!!

First things first, an update on what I saw last week regarding the snazzy new Troll eyes. Sadly, they've changed back to normal. It appears that it was just a bug, and now those cool blue eyes belong to all the Death Knights that are roaming around. Here you can see my Troll's eyes, back to normal:

On the topic of Death Knights, they also have a new character select screen. Check it out:

I was also able to track down a Warlock (specifically Xiah of Emerald Dream) in Metamorphosis form.

The barber shops are now in commission. I was able to get my Rogue in for a haircut at the low low cost of 8g33s!:

The new system for learning your vanity pets and mounts as abilities has been implimented. It's clearly in an early stage, but it's very nice. At the time of the screens being taken it wasn't working as intended, so I had to get an entirely new mount, but it's great nonetheless and I can see this saving a lot of bag space for a lot of people.

My questing continued as normal, and I was able to take my Rogue into Dragonblight, one of the more central zones of Northrend. I was really surprised at how intricate this zone is, but moreover how well designed the quests are. A lot of the concepts that Blizzard is trying out for the quests are very elaborate and add a whole new level of gameplay. They're absolutely stepping into a brave new world, and they're doing it with gusto.

I'll give an example. I was given a quest where I was to defend an hourglass from the Bronze Dragonflight. I expected this to be a run of the mill quest where I slowly fight off wave after wave of increasing numbers of mobs. I never expected that I'd be getting some help... in the form of myself!

I was thoroughly surprised by this, it made me excited to see what other types of quests were in store for me. I was also curious to see what kind of parties I'd be invited to, because I was left with this warning...

The quests that I did all followed path together, and didn't require me to run around to different areas to complete a single quest. They also kept my attention locked in completely. I never found myself at a point where I felt like I was getting bored. I was consistently moving around, instead of completing innumerable quests in one spot. There was little chance for the areas to stagnate.

The quests also allow you to again, really feel like you're part of the Warcraft universe and just have a good time. There's one quest that really sticks out in my mind where I was charged by D.E.H.T.A. to free some baby Murlocs. Ultimately, I assumed that the quest would similar those in Terokkar Forest where I freed orphans. But instead of just running away once they'd been freed, the Murlocs (unlike the orphans) followed me around! As simple and silly as this sounds, it stuck a big smirk on my face. The end of the quest looked a little something like this:

I really enjoyed it a lot! And also, if there are any Warcraft III fans out there, you'll be happy to find some more of your old fiends hanging around...

On my adventures through Dragonblight I was also startled to see a Hunter with a stylish new exotic pet, thanks to their new Beast Mastery talent. This screen was taken in a bit of a hurry, because I'm only level 73 and she was level 76.

Near the end of my adventures for this week I was able to get up close and personal (though, I was unable to find any groups) with The Nexus. This whole area looks amazing, and even flying past it is a treat. It suddenly became clear why we haven't gotten separate PvE and PvP models (other than re-colors) in a while, because Blizzard must have had their art guys working on Northrend.

In a nutshell, that's what my second week in the Wrath of the Lich King beta gave me. I was someone that really thought that The Burning Crusade was a good expansion. All of the zones were great, I never got bored questing in any of them, and I felt as if the dungeons scattered throughout were a lot of fun. I only see World of Warcraft getting better with the addition of Wrath of the Lich King. Blizzard is clearly stepping up how we as players quest, and level through the world that we've all come to know and love.

They've done a great job at making something that's growing old new again, and it looks like they've perfected the art.

If there's anything in the beta that you'd like me to check out, or you'd like a closer look at feel free to let me know!

Week 3, here I come!

Update: IE7 Crashes

If you're using IE7 to read this blog, chances are good that you've been unable to read this blog for the past couple days.

Luckily, Sitemeter has cleaned up their act and it should be taken care of. If you're still experiencing any issues, clear your cache and it should fix the issue.

How To: Maximize your PvE DPS as Combat Swords

Combat Swords is the reigning king of PvE DPS. Mathematically it has been proven to be superior to other specs due to its ability to proc extra attacks. Specifically, having a fast offhand and a slow main hand will do wonders here, because if your fast offhand procs an extra swing through Sword Specialization your main hand will be the one dealing that extra attack. The extra attacks you do will also give you opportunities to proc your hit reactive abilities (which as I mentioned before, is a lot).

But a spec is only as powerful as the person behind it, and knowing how to use Combat Swords is just as important as knowing what slots to put your talent points in. Luckily, Combat Swords such a powerful spec because of how user friendly it is.

Your rotation as Combat Swords is very simple: Commit your first three combo points to Slice and Dice, five to Rupture and repeat. This rotation was designed with Relentless Strikes and Combat Potency in mind, but know that there is a chance that you won't be able to get a five point Rupture off every single rotation. Should you find yourself in a rotation where you don't get any additional combo points, and your Slice and Dice is close to wearing off, simply use a three or four point Rupture.

For example: When I'm setting up this rotation I'll always open with a Garrote and then attain my additional two combo points for my first Slice and Dice through Sinister Strikes. I will then pop Slice and Dice and start Sinister Striking so that I can get as many combo points for my Rupture as I can. I will generally put Rupture on my target when I have 10 seconds left on Slice and Dice, to ensure that I am able to keep Slice and Dice up at all times.

You should also be mindful of your cooldowns when using a build as powerful as Combat Swords. I'll generally pop Adrenaline Rush and Blade Flurry right as I open with Garrote. The tanks in my guild are top notch so holding aggro has never proved to be an issue for them, and that's what allows me to do this (you'll be of much more use to your raid alive, so gauge your tanks accordingly). Once my initial Garrote wears off I'll pop Vanish and throw on a second Garrote. From here on out I'll be popping all of my cooldowns as they come up while closely following my rotation.

If there's anything that can throw a wrench in the engine of a Combat Swords Rogue, strangely it's Adrenaline Rush. This ability, while powerful, can sometimes give you too much energy. And should you get a string of Combat Potency procs at the same time, (I have my Scrolling Combat Text tell me this) as displayed below:

You might run into a position where you've actually got more combo points than you know what to do with. If you read my earlier guide on what rules to follow to maximize your DPS, you should already have Deadly Poison applied to your offhand sword, and by this point you should have five stacks of it on your target. Just throw a quick Envenom! Your poisons will be back up there in no time, and it'll provide a great boost to your DPS. But, while you do this be mindful of Slice and Dice. Slice and Dice is your #1 priority!

As for gear, make sure that you stick with keeping your hit rating as close to the cap (which is 363 hit rating) as you possibly can. BUT! Know that if you're raiding, there are plenty of buffs given to you by your raid, so having the cap on your own isn't always essential. Understand what your raid members are doing for you! The magic number tends to be 308 in a fully buffed raid.

Hitting more will mean more Sword Specilization procs, and also more procs of your reactive items/abilities (Mongoose, Combat Potency, [Blinkstrike], [Dragonspine Trophy], [Warp-Spring Coil], [Madness of the Betrayer], Deadly Poison, etc.) and in turn, more damage.

What poisons you choose should depend entirely on your group. If you're in a raid enviroment chances are good that you'll be put in an group where you're surrounded by classes that improve your ability to do damage, but in a perfect world you'll get an Enhancement Shaman. If you do, only put Deadly Poison on your offhand. The Enhancement Shaman in your group should be dropping Windfury Totem to make sure that your main hand will do all that it can do. However, if you find yourself in a five man situation and your tank prefers Grace of Air Totem for the extra chance to dodge, or you're caster heavy so your group requires a Wrath of Air Totem, poison your main hand with Instant Poison. Having Instant Poison on your main hand and Deadly Poison on your offhand will boost your DPS the most, because Deadly Poison requires fewer applications to preform well, and Instant Poison won't have any problems applying while it's on your main hand weapon.

If you follow these tips you should see a good amount of success in your journeys through the dark depths of Azeroth and Outland. Just be sure to remember these simple rules:

1.) Spec correctly!
2.) Always, ALWAYS keep Slice and Dice up!
3.) Keep that hit rating as close to the cap as you can get it (within REASON)!

And you'll do just fine.
